About

Hammond: Naval Warfare is a symmetrical, two-player competitive simulation of early 20th century tactical naval battle. Players take turns controlling movement on a grid of five vessels, each with unique rules governing movement, attack, and supply capabilities. The board is divided into regions of land and sea, including a central, neutral island region, fixed defensive land fortifications, foggy areas, and a protected city for each player. The objective is to successfully penetrate the opponent's land defenses and attack their city. US Patent 1023375, Naval War Game Apparatus, was the first patent issued (in 1912) to prolific American inventor John Hays Hammond Jr. Over a century later, the naval strategy game was adapted and published by the Hammond Castle Museum, which preserves and curates Hammond's former home and art collection, along with information about his inventions and life, in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
