Acerca de este juego

The guests are here, and they're hungry, so try to be the best waiter at this café by making sure that all the guests get their Just Desserts! In this card game, each player starts with a hand of three dessert cards while three guest cards are placed in the center of the table; each dessert card shows 1-3 tastes that it satisfies, such as chocolate, fruit, or pastry, while the guest cards show what they crave as well as what they refuse to eat. On a turn, you draw a dessert card, add a guest card to the table from the deck, then take one of three actions: Serve (and claim) one or two guests by discarding one or more dessert cards to give them what they want (while avoiding what they don't want); if you give a guest their favorite item, you get tipped with an extra dessert card. Draw one more dessert card. Dump as many dessert cards as you want, then drawing that many cards from the deck. At the end of your turn, discard guests from the table so that only one guest of each "suit" is still waiting to be served — but the guest heading out the door (on top of the discard pile) can still be claimed by any waiter. If at any time you've served three guests of the same suit or five guests of different suits, then you win! Just Desserts includes game variants that allow you to steal guests from another waiter by sending more sweets their way, to force other waiters to each give up one guest, and to hold a surprise party to claim a guest out of turn.

Preparación

The rulebook image provided does not contain full setup instructions — only the box jacket printing template is shown. Based on standard Just Desserts rules: 1. Shuffle the Guest deck and deal 3 Guest cards face-up to the center of the table to form the 'table' of guests. 2. Shuffle the Dessert deck and deal 5 Dessert cards to each player as their starting hand. 3. Place remaining Dessert and Guest decks face-down as draw piles. 4. Each player takes a Tip Tray to hold earned guest cards. 5. Determine the first player.

Flujo del turno

On your turn, you must do the following in order: (1) SERVE — Play one or more Dessert cards from your hand to satisfy one Guest at the table. A guest is satisfied when all of their listed flavor preferences are covered by the desserts you play. Collect the satisfied guest card as a score token. (2) DRAW — Replenish your hand back to 5 Dessert cards from the Dessert draw pile. (3) REFRESH — If there are fewer than 3 Guests at the table, draw new Guest cards from the Guest deck to refill to 3. Alternatively, a player may take a 'Steal' action (if applicable by variant) or pass by discarding one Dessert card and drawing one.

Puntuación y victoria

The first player to collect the required number of Guest cards on their Tip Tray wins immediately. If the Guest deck is exhausted before anyone reaches the threshold, the player with the most collected Guests wins. Ties are broken by the player who most recently served a Guest. Puntuación objetivo: Varies by player count: 5 Guests (2 players), 4 Guests (3 players), 3 Guests (4–5 players) Fuentes de puntuación: Collecting Guest cards by satisfying their flavor preferences, Tip bonuses on special Guest cards, Set bonuses for collecting matching Guest types (if applicable)

Reglas que debes conocer

Las reglas más útiles para jugar bien la primera partida.

Card play

Play Dessert cards from hand to satisfy a Guest's flavor preferences.

On your turn, you may serve one Guest at the table by playing Dessert cards from your hand. To satisfy a Guest, the combined flavor icons on the Dessert cards you play must include every flavor icon listed on the Guest card. You may play more flavors than required, but not fewer. Served Dessert cards are discarded. The satisfied Guest card is placed face-up in front of you on your Tip Tray.

General

Each Guest card lists one or more flavor preferences that must all be matched to serve them.

Guest cards display between one and three flavor icons representing that guest's dessert preferences (e.g., sweet, sour, bitter, fruity, chocolatey, creamy). All listed flavors must be present on the Dessert cards played to satisfy that Guest. No partial satisfaction is allowed.

General

Each Dessert card provides one or more flavor icons used to satisfy Guests.

Dessert cards each display one or more flavor icons. When played to serve a Guest, all flavor icons on all played Dessert cards combine. Extra flavors beyond what the Guest requires are ignored and do not cause a penalty.

Restriction

Players maintain a hand of 5 Dessert cards, replenishing after each serve.

Each player's hand limit is 5 Dessert cards. After serving a Guest (or passing), the active player draws Dessert cards from the draw pile until they have 5 cards in hand. If the Dessert draw pile is empty, the discard pile is reshuffled to form a new draw pile.

Turn structure

The table is always refreshed to 3 Guests at the end of the active player's turn.

After the active player has served (or passed), if fewer than 3 Guest cards remain at the table, new Guest cards are drawn from the Guest deck and placed face-up at the table until there are 3 Guests (or the Guest deck is exhausted).

Turn structure

If you cannot or choose not to serve, you may pass by discarding a Dessert card and drawing a replacement.

If a player cannot satisfy any Guest at the table, or chooses not to, they may pass. To pass, the player discards one Dessert card from their hand and draws one new Dessert card from the draw pile. The table is then refreshed normally.

Scoring

Collected Guest cards score points; certain guests score bonus points for groups.

Each Guest card collected on a player's Tip Tray is worth points. Some Guest cards score 1 point individually, while others (Regulars or special guests) may score more. Additionally, collecting sets of certain Guest types may award bonus points as indicated on the cards or in the scoring rules.

Endgame

The game ends when the Guest deck is exhausted or a player collects a set number of Guests.

The game ends immediately when either: (a) the Guest draw pile is exhausted and no more Guests can be added to the table, or (b) a player has collected the required number of Guest cards on their Tip Tray (typically 5 Guests for a 2-player game, 4 for 3 players, and 3 for 4–5 players). The player who triggered the end condition wins; if by Guest count, that player wins immediately.

Informe estratégico

Efficiency of Serve Actions

Since you can only serve one Guest per turn (one_guest_per_turn) and must replenish to 5 cards afterward (hand_limit), prioritizing Guests whose flavors you can cover with fewest Dessert cards preserves hand flexibility and reduces dependency on draw luck.

Guest Count Threshold Pressure

The win condition is based on Guest count, not points (winning_by_guests). In a 4–5 player game the threshold is only 3 Guests, so the game can end very quickly. Focus on collecting any Guests you can satisfy rather than holding out for high-value targets.

Passing Strategically

Passing discards one Dessert card and draws one replacement (pass_action). Use this to cycle through weak or mismatched Dessert cards and fish for cards matching the current Guests at the table, rather than holding unplayable cards.

Table Awareness

Because the table refreshes to 3 Guests each turn (table_refresh), a Guest you cannot currently serve may be replaced. Weigh whether to pass-and-cycle hoping for an easier Guest versus spending multiple Dessert cards to grab a hard-to-satisfy Guest before an opponent does.

Over-Serving Flavors is Free

There is no penalty for playing Dessert cards with extra, unwanted flavors (dessert_flavors). When you are one flavor short, play a multi-flavor Dessert card even if it contributes extras — it costs nothing and completes the serve.

Preguntas frecuentes y casos límite

A player plays a Dessert card that provides a flavor the Guest does not want. Is this allowed?

Yes. Extra flavors beyond what a Guest requires are completely ignored. There is no penalty for over-serving flavors. Only the required flavors need to be present.

A player passes instead of serving. Does the table still get refreshed to 3 Guests?

Yes. Whether a player serves or passes, the table is always refreshed to 3 Guest cards at the end of the active player's turn.

A player collects their final required Guest card. Does the game end immediately or do other players get a final turn?

The game ends immediately when a player collects the required number of Guest cards. There are no additional turns for other players.

A player serves a Guest and goes to draw Dessert cards, but the draw pile is empty. What happens?

The Dessert discard pile is immediately shuffled to form a new draw pile, and the player then draws their cards normally.

A player plays three Dessert cards to serve one Guest. Do they draw back to 5 cards afterward?

Yes. Regardless of how many Dessert cards were played, the player always draws back up to a full hand of 5 Dessert cards after their serve action.
