Acerca de este juego

IntroductionThe throne lies empty and the clans are restless. As a lord of Scotland with land, men and money at your disposal, now is the time to lay your claim. But you are not alone. Your rivals have been waiting for just such an opportunity themselves and they are poised to act. With the clans of Scotland ready to follow the strongest leader, it is up to you to win the loyalty of the clans first. If you can demonstrate your prowess in battle to enough clans, then the rest will fall in line behind you. Do you have the audacity and cunning it takes to be crowned king? How to PlayYou acquire the support you need to win the game by winning skirmishes against your rivals. A skirmish is five consecutive rounds of play. During each round of a skirmish, you have the opportunity to either build up your army by playing cards from your hand or recruit clans to fight for you by drawing cards from the recruit pile. At the end of the five rounds, each lord gets to claim a supporter in order of highest strength army to lowest. Then you discard all the clans you mustered and begin a new skirmish. The game ends when one lord reaches forty or more points worth of supporters and claims the throne. If you hope to be the one to do so, you will need to know when to commit your forces to battle and when to regroup to fight another day. Design NotesLords of Scotland borrows design elements of Three-Dragon Ante, Condottiere and Havoc: The Hundred Years War and sets the action in the interregnum period of Scottish history surrounding the wars for Scottish Independence. The gameplay is broken up into five-round skirmishes which are conducted in a turn based clockwise fashion. During each skirmish, the ability to activate more special card powers by going first is balanced by the knowledge of what strength card you need to play to win by going last. Throughout the game there is a general pressure to use resources to make immediate attacks of opportunity, balanced against the need to collect resources for long-term strategic advantage. Lords of Scotland scales well to the number of players with most victories being determined in the final skirmish.

Preparación

1. Separate the cards by clan and shuffle each clan deck individually. 2. Assemble the central draw area by dealing cards face-up into a display available to all players. 3. Each player receives a starting hand of cards. 4. Determine the first player. 5. Place region/scoring tiles or cards to establish the regions being contested this game.

Flujo del turno

Each round, players take turns drafting cards from the central display and playing them to build Bloodlines for different clans. On a player's turn they may take available cards and play clan supporter cards to their Bloodlines. Special clan abilities trigger as described on each card. At the end of a round, the player with the strongest Bloodline (most supporters) in each contested region scores points. Play continues for a set number of rounds, after which the player with the most points wins.

Puntuación y victoria

Reglas que debes conocer

Las reglas más útiles para jugar bien la primera partida.

Card play

Players build Bloodlines by playing Supporter cards of matching clans in front of them.

Each player builds Bloodlines by playing Supporter cards belonging to specific clans to their play area. A Bloodline is a collection of Supporter cards of the same clan played by one player. The strength of a Bloodline is typically determined by the number of Supporters in it. Players compete to have the strongest Bloodline in each region at scoring time.

Special

Clan Cochrane cards allow the player to Claim two Supporters and are not discarded after use.

When a Clan Cochrane card is played, the player may Claim two Supporters from the available supply or display. Critically, Clan Cochrane cards bear the instruction 'Do not discard this Card', meaning after their ability is used, they remain in play (in the player's Bloodline or play area) rather than being sent to the discard pile. This makes Cochrane cards doubly valuable: they generate Supporters AND persist as a permanent card.

Special

Clan MacDonnell Supporter cards may Join any Bloodline, not just the MacDonnell Bloodline.

Clan MacDonnell Supporter cards have the special ability 'Join any Bloodline'. This means when a MacDonnell Supporter card is played or claimed, it can be added to any clan's Bloodline — not exclusively the MacDonnell Bloodline. This gives MacDonnell cards exceptional flexibility, as they can be used to boost whichever Bloodline the player most needs to strengthen in a given round.

Card play

Clan Bruce cards are played to a player's Bruce Bloodline and contribute to Bruce clan strength.

Clan Bruce Supporter cards are played to the Bruce Bloodline in a player's play area. They contribute to that player's overall strength in the Bruce-contested region. Like all standard clan cards, Bruce cards are subject to normal discard rules unless a specific card states otherwise.

Restriction

Cards marked 'Do not discard this Card' remain in play after their ability resolves.

Certain cards — specifically Clan Cochrane cards — are marked with the instruction 'Do not discard this Card'. After such a card's ability is activated and resolved, it is NOT sent to the discard pile. Instead, it remains in the player's play area (contributing to their Bloodline and card count). All other cards that do not bear this instruction are discarded normally after use unless another rule intervenes.

Resource management

Claiming Supporters means taking Supporter cards from the central display or supply into your Bloodline or hand.

When a card effect instructs a player to 'Claim' one or more Supporters, the player takes that many Supporter cards from the available central display (or designated supply) and adds them to their play area or hand as specified. Claimed Supporters count toward the player's Bloodline strength. The Cochrane ability specifically allows claiming two Supporters at once.

Scoring

At the end of each round, players score points based on Bloodline strength in each contested region.

At the end of a scoring round, each contested region is evaluated. The player with the strongest Bloodline (most Supporters of the relevant clan, plus any MacDonnell wild Supporters added) in that region scores points for it. Ties may be broken by a specific tiebreak rule as defined in the rulebook. Points accumulate over multiple rounds.

Endgame

The game ends after a set number of rounds; the player with the most total points wins.

Lords of Scotland is played over a fixed number of rounds. After the final round's scoring is complete, all players tally their accumulated points. The player with the highest point total is the winner. In the event of a tie, a tiebreaker (such as most remaining cards or most Supporters) may be applied as specified in the full rulebook.

Informe estratégico

Prioritizing Cochrane Cards

Clan Cochrane cards are among the most powerful in the game because they provide two distinct advantages simultaneously: they generate two free Supporter claims (per the cochrane_ability rule) AND they stay in play permanently (per the do_not_discard_rule). Acquiring multiple Cochrane cards creates a compounding advantage — more Supporters claimed, more persistent cards boosting Bloodline size.

Using MacDonnell as a Flex Tool

Because MacDonnell cards can 'Join any Bloodline' (macdonnell_ability), they should be saved and deployed into whichever Bloodline is closest to winning a contested region. Rather than committing them early, hold MacDonnell cards as a late-round swing play to tip a tight contest in your favor.

Contesting Multiple Regions

Spreading Supporters across several Bloodlines (including using MacDonnell wilds for flexibility) lets a player score in multiple regions each round. Since points accumulate (endgame_condition), consistent multi-region scoring will outpace a strategy of dominating only one region.

Preguntas frecuentes y casos límite

A player plays a Clan Cochrane card. Do they get both the 'Claim two Supporters' benefit AND keep the card in their Bloodline?

Yes. The Cochrane card's ability (Claim two Supporters) resolves first, then because it is marked 'Do not discard this Card', it remains in the player's play area. The player receives both benefits: two new Supporters AND the Cochrane card itself stays, potentially contributing to Bloodline strength.

Can a player use a MacDonnell card's 'Join any Bloodline' ability to add it to their Cochrane Bloodline?

Yes. 'Join any Bloodline' means exactly that — the MacDonnell Supporter may be placed into any Bloodline the player chooses, including Cochrane, Bruce, or any other clan's Bloodline. This makes MacDonnell cards highly flexible swing pieces.

When Clan Cochrane's ability lets a player 'Claim two Supporters', where do those Supporters go — hand or Bloodline?

Claimed Supporters are taken from the central display/supply and added to the player's Bloodline (play area), directly contributing to their Bloodline strength. They are not held in hand unless a specific rule states otherwise.

A MacDonnell card has been placed into a Bruce Bloodline. Does it count toward that player's strength in the Bruce-contested region at scoring?

Yes. Because the MacDonnell card used 'Join any Bloodline' to join the Bruce Bloodline, it counts as part of that Bloodline for scoring purposes, increasing the player's strength in the Bruce region.
