Preparación

1. Place the Sock Monster in the center of the table. 2. Put all 48 socks into the box, close it, and shake vigorously to mix them. 3. Pour all socks into the center of the playing surface to form a large heap. 4. Leave the 13 clothes-pegs in the box — they are used as reward tokens throughout the game. 5. Determine the starting player: whoever is wearing two matching socks today goes first. If multiple players qualify, the one with the biggest feet starts. That player gives the starting signal: "Socken zocken!" (or the equivalent in the language being used).

Flujo del turno

There are no individual turns — all players act simultaneously in real-time. Each round proceeds as follows: PHASE 1 – RUMMAGING: All players simultaneously rummage through the sock heap with one hand (other hand must rest on their lap), trying to identify and claim matching pairs by placing them face-up in front of themselves. PHASE 2 – SOCK STOP: The moment any player has five pairs in front of them, they grab the Sock Monster from the center. This ends rummaging immediately. Any socks still held in hand must be dropped back onto the heap. PHASE 3 – VERIFICATION: All players collectively check whether the monster-grabber's pairs are truly matching (identical from top to bottom). PHASE 4 – SCORING: The monster-grabber earns one clothes-peg if all their pairs are correct; none if even one pair is wrong (and the player with the most pairs among others gets the peg instead). All other players also count their correct pairs; the player(s) with the most pairs among non-monster-grabbers each earn one clothes-peg. PHASE 5 – RESET: All socks are returned to the heap and shuffled. The round winner places the Sock Monster back in the center and calls the starting signal to begin the next round.

Puntuación y victoria

The winner is the first player to collect three clothes-pegs across multiple rounds. Puntuación objetivo: 3 Fuentes de puntuación: Monster-grabber earns 1 clothes-peg for having five correct pairs (all pairs must be verified as matching), If monster-grabber has a wrong pair, the non-grabber player with the most correct pairs earns the clothes-peg instead, The non-monster-grabber player(s) with the most correct pairs each earn 1 clothes-peg per round, In a tie for most pairs among non-grabbers, each tied player receives 1 clothes-peg

Reglas que debes conocer

Las reglas más útiles para jugar bien la primera partida.

Restriction

Players may only rummage with one hand; the other must rest on their lap at all times.

During rummaging, each player may only use one hand to search through the sock heap. The other hand must remain on the player's lap (or under the table, per some language editions) at all times. This restriction applies to all players throughout the rummaging phase.

Restriction

Once a pair is placed in front of a player, it cannot be taken by another player.

A pair of socks that a player has successfully identified and laid down in front of themselves is permanently secured. No other player may steal, take, or otherwise remove those socks from that player's collection for the remainder of the round.

General

A valid pair consists of two socks that are completely identical from top to bottom.

The socks in the game look very similar to one another. A valid matching pair requires both socks to be completely identical in pattern and color from top to bottom. Players must take great care when claiming pairs, as incorrect pairs carry a penalty for the monster-grabber.

Turn structure

A round ends immediately when a player places five pairs in front of themselves and grabs the Sock Monster.

As soon as any player has five matching pairs laid out in front of them, they must grab the Sock Monster from the center of the table. This action immediately ends the rummaging phase for all players. Any socks still held in a player's hand at that moment must be dropped back onto the heap and cannot be added to that player's collection.

Restriction

Socks held in hand when the Sock Monster is grabbed must be returned to the heap and cannot be kept.

When the round ends (Sock Monster is grabbed), any socks a player is still holding in their hand must immediately be dropped back onto the central heap. These socks may not be added to the player's personal collection or counted as pairs.

Special

After the round ends, all players collectively verify whether the monster-grabber's pairs are all correct.

Once the Sock Monster is grabbed and rummaging stops, all players together inspect the pairs laid out by the player who grabbed the Sock Monster. They confirm whether every pair is a true match (identical from top to bottom). This check applies only to the monster-grabber's pairs.

Scoring

The monster-grabber earns one clothes-peg if all their pairs are correct; no peg if any pair is wrong.

After verification: if all pairs laid out by the monster-grabber are correct, they receive one clothes-peg as a reward. If even a single pair is found to be incorrect, the monster-grabber receives no clothes-peg for this round. In the case of an incorrect pair, the player among the remaining players who has the most correct pairs instead receives the clothes-peg.

Scoring

The non-monster-grabber player with the most correct pairs earns one clothes-peg; ties give each tied player a peg.

After the monster-grabber's pairs are verified, all other players count their own correct pairs. The player among them who collected the most correct pairs earns one clothes-peg. If multiple players are tied for the most pairs, each of those tied players receives one clothes-peg.

Informe estratégico

Accuracy over speed for the monster-grabber

The monster-grabber earns nothing if even one pair is wrong. It is better to verify each pair carefully before laying it down than to rush and risk forfeiting the peg entirely.

Maximizing pairs as a non-grabber

Non-grabbers earn a clothes-peg for having the most correct pairs, with ties giving everyone a peg. There is no penalty for incorrect pairs among non-grabbers (only the monster-grabber is verified), so non-grabbers should focus on volume while still aiming for correctness.

When to grab the monster

Grabbing the monster at exactly five pairs ends rummaging for everyone. If your pairs are all correct you get a peg, but so might a non-grabber with many pairs. Grabbing early can cut off opponents who are accumulating lots of pairs.

One-hand discipline

Since only one hand may rummage, developing a systematic search pattern (e.g., working from one side of the heap) is more efficient than random grabbing and reduces time wasted re-examining the same socks.

Protecting your collection

Once a pair is in front of you it cannot be stolen. Prioritize laying down valid pairs quickly to secure them, especially in a crowded game where opponents may inadvertently displace socks near your area.

Tiebreaker strategy

In the tiebreaker, only one pair is needed and the first to grab the monster wins. Speed and immediate recognition of a definitive match is more important than finding five pairs. Focus on the most distinctive or easily recognizable sock patterns.

Variant: adapting to missing socks

In the odd-sock variant, spending too long hunting for a single hard-to-find sock may be a trap if that sock has been removed. Breadth-first searching (checking many different socks) is better than fixating on one specific pattern.

Preguntas frecuentes y casos límite

The monster-grabber has five pairs but one is incorrect. Does anyone get a peg for grabbing the monster?

No — the monster-grabber receives no peg when any pair is wrong. Instead, the peg goes to the non-grabber player who collected the most correct pairs (the same peg that would normally go to the top non-grabber anyway). The grabber's peg is simply forfeited.

Can the same player earn both the monster-grabber peg AND the most-pairs peg in a single round?

No. The monster-grabber peg and the most-pairs peg are separate awards for separate roles. The most-pairs peg is awarded among all OTHER players (non-grabbers). The monster-grabber is only eligible for the grabber peg.

A player is holding a nearly-complete pair when the Sock Monster is grabbed. Can they keep those socks?

No. Any socks still held in hand when the Sock Monster is grabbed must be immediately dropped back onto the heap. They cannot be added to the player's collection, even if they would have formed a valid pair.

Only two of three players who tied at three clothes-pegs are the oldest. Who plays the tiebreaker?

All players who simultaneously reached three clothes-pegs participate in the tiebreaker round, regardless of age. Age is only used to determine who holds the Sock Monster and gives the starting signal — it does not exclude anyone from the tiebreaker.

A player grabs the Sock Monster with five pairs but fails verification. Does the round still end?

Yes. The round ends the moment the Sock Monster is grabbed, regardless of whether the pairs are later verified as correct. Verification only affects whether the grabber earns a clothes-peg — it does not restart or invalidate the round.

Multiple players earn a clothes-peg in the final round and all reach three pegs simultaneously. What happens?

A decisive tiebreaker round is played among all players who simultaneously reached three clothes-pegs. All socks go back to the center. Only those tied players rummage. The first to place one correct matching pair in front of them and grab the Sock Monster wins the game.

When using the variant, can a player claim a single sock as a pair if no match exists?

No. A valid pair always requires two completely identical socks. In the variant, if one sock from a pair has been removed from the game, players may continue searching for it but will never find a match — only complete, identical pairs can be placed and scored.
