U-BOAT CAPTAIN, TWILIGHT 1943-1945 is a solitaire, tactical-operational level game covering individual German World War 2 U-Boat patrols and combat encounters, in the latter years of the war, 1943-1945. This is a complete, stand alone game, which mates with U-Boat Captain: 1939-1942 2nd ed. Twilight consists of 48 pages and comes with full rules, optional and advanced rules, seven U-Boat Displays, map, logsheet, 76 U-Boat counters, 24 markers, and Reference Cards, along with with several historical scenarios and campaign games (of various lengths), extensive examples of play, historically rated U-Boat "aces" (including eight historical Commander Cards, #9-18), and Designer's Notes. The game has the feel of a miniatures rule set, but with boardgame format. You can utilize various historical German U-Boat Types, including late war electroboats (Type VIIC/41, IXC, IXC/40, XXI, XXIII, VIIC, and IXD-2), each rated for fuel capacity and consumption, number of torpedoes carried, deck gun characteristics, and durability/survivability. Conduct monthly patrols to various locations (North Atlantic, British Isles, West Africa, Indian Ocean, etc.) from 1943 to the end of the war in 1945. Your goal is to sink the most tonnage you can, without being sunk yourself. In each patrol, you will sail to your area of operation... conduct daily patrols/searches... if you have an encounter, decide when/if to attack (watch out for escorts)... if you attack, perform the attack sequence and launch torpedoes, or use your deck gun. When fuel starts to run low, or your boat has accumulated too much damage, you can sail back to port for refit and rest, before beginning your next patrol. Sink enough allied shipping in your career and earn for yourself the coveted Knight's Cross. Unlike the happy times of earlier years, in Twilight you may find yourself aiming more for survival than sinking enemy ships (even more so in 1945). With growing allied technological and air supremacy, the game tables and "feel" of the game noticeably differs from early war patrols, thus reflecting the realities facing German commanders. What's New in Twilight: Twilight retains the same game system as the U-Boat Captain: 1939-1942 2nd ed., but with many latter war extras: such as special electroboat rules and tables, crew morale rules, advanced 1943-35 optional rules, IXD-2 long range attack boat rules (allowing you to do patrols to the Indian Ocean), additional Historical Commander Cards (#9-16, with special abilities that mirror actual commander characteristics/tactics several new optional rules, including 1942 modifications that simulate the evolving nature of the war; and special Commander Cards that provide special abilities that mirror the characteristics/tactics of historical U-Boat commanders. Twilight was designed to easily mate with U-Boat Captain: 1939-1942 2nd ed (available separately). It also mates with U-Boat Captain: Advanced Ed if you own that game. Either way, If you have the early war game, you will no doubt enjoy and benefit from playing Twilight, which will allow you to simulate the entire war. This Minden Battlegame book emphasizes high playability combined with authentic historicity to produce a game that plays quickly but retains a strong historical and authentic narrative. As such, the U-Boat Captain game system aims to be your "go to" game for highly playable WW2 submarine action covering the Battle of the Atlantic and round the world. The game system often reflects the "risk versus reward" nature of the theater, as it places you in the role of a U-Boat commander, working with your crew to employ good tactics in an effort to sink allied shipping, while avoiding being sunk yourself. This game, with its new content, late war rules, electroboat provisions, and several new U-Boat types, provides players with a comprehensive game that covers the war years from 1943-1945 (and from 1939-1945 when used along side the earlier volume). Can you be a successful U-Boat Captain? —description from the publisher
