About this game

Step into the opulent yet treacherous world of Gilded, a strategic board game set against the vibrant backdrop of Elizabethan England. Every playable character represents an actual historical figure from Elizabeth’s court, and every Scenario Card is based on a real-life event from her reign. As a member of the royal court, you will navigate a realm shadowed by dangerous rivalries and shifting alliances. Every decision you make carries weight—not just for your own standing, but for the nation itself. Your actions can tip the scales, ushering England into a prosperous Golden Age or plunging it into a dismal Dark Age, allowing you to either reap the rewards of prosperity or ruthlessly thrust your rivals (and yourself!) into poverty. To survive and thrive, players must navigate historical events and manage their influence. Each round brings unique, real-world events that players can resolve individually for personal gain or choose to work together for high-reward, shared outcomes. When taking actions, you will balance immediate tactical advantages with long-term strategy—drafting and playing cards, acquiring character upgrades, and pursuing Secret Missions that offer high-point rewards. Because gold serves as both your currency and potential end-game score, you face a constant dilemma: spend your wealth immediately on powerful court advantages or hoard it for victory points. The game reaches its dramatic climax with the Queen's death, triggered the moment a player achieves 45 Victory Points—a deliberate design choice representing one point for each year of Elizabeth I's historic 45-year reign. Once the end-game is triggered and final turns are completed, players calculate their ultimate scores by combining their board points and remaining wealth. However, ambition carries a price: any incomplete Secret Missions remaining in your hand will penalize your score. Only the player who has best balanced court intrigue, wealth, and secret agendas will outmaneuver their rivals to win the crown's ultimate favor. —description from the designer
