Acerca de este juego

Explore places, combine items, and experience stories in Adventure Games, a series of co-operative games from German publisher KOSMOS. In each of these titles, players are presented with a mysterious story that they must unravel over the course of play. Working together, players explore common areas, talk to people, look for clues, and combine various items to reveal the secret of the story. Depending on what decisions the players make, the course of history changes and there is no going back! Unlike the co-operative EXIT: The Game series, titles in this series focus on the telling and discovery of the story with no time pressure. That said, many different paths can be experienced during play, with more than one correct resolution to the story waiting to be discovered. Each title consists of three chapters, each taking about 75 minutes to play. Nothing is destroyed, so the games can be played multiple times. In The Dungeon, the players awaken in a prison cell in the middle ages with no memory of how they got there. What happened? What strange things are taking place in this dungeon? And most importantly, how can they get out? Over three chapters, players will jointly explore rooms, combine objects, and perhaps even encounter creatures that lurk in the dark rooms of the old castle...

Preparación

1. Lay out the player tracking sheet (showing player columns for Health/Max Health, Location, Items and Cards, Map Revealed, and Unresolved Points of Interest). 2. Assign each player a column on the tracking sheet. 3. Record starting health values in each player's Health / Max Health row. 4. Note the starting location for each player. 5. Set up the map area, beginning with only the starting tile revealed. 6. Record any starting items or cards distributed to players. 7. Mark any initial Points of Interest as unresolved. 8. Begin Chapter 1.

Flujo del turno

On their turn, a player may move to an adjacent revealed location, interact with their current location (resolving a Point of Interest or using an item/card), or perform a special action granted by a card or game event. After acting, the group may discuss outcomes and update the tracking sheet accordingly (health changes, new items, newly revealed map sections, resolved or new Points of Interest). Play proceeds clockwise. Chapters end when the group meets the chapter's narrative conclusion condition.

Reglas que debes conocer

Las reglas más útiles para jugar bien la primera partida.

Resource management

Each player tracks their current Health and their Maximum Health separately.

Each player has two health values recorded on the tracking sheet: current Health and Maximum Health. Current Health decreases when a player takes damage and increases when healed. Current Health can never exceed Maximum Health. If a player's current Health reaches 0, they are incapacitated (see rule: player_incapacitation). Maximum Health may only change if a specific game card or event explicitly raises or lowers it.

Special

A player whose Health reaches 0 is incapacitated and cannot act until healed.

When a player's current Health is reduced to 0, they are incapacitated. An incapacitated player cannot move, interact with locations, or use items on their turn. Other players may use items or abilities to restore at least 1 Health to the incapacitated player, returning them to an active state. If all players are simultaneously incapacitated, the group loses the chapter.

Movement

Each player's current location is recorded on the tracking sheet.

Each player occupies exactly one location on the dungeon map at any time, recorded in the Location row of the tracking sheet. Players may only move to locations that are adjacent to their current location and have already been revealed on the map. 'Adjacent' means directly connected via a passage on the revealed map tiles.

Movement

On their turn, a player may move to one adjacent, already-revealed location.

A player may spend their turn action to move from their current location to one adjacent revealed location. Only one location move is allowed per turn action unless a card or special rule explicitly grants additional movement. Players do not have to move on their turn.

Special

New map sections are revealed when players reach the boundary of the known map.

The dungeon map starts with only the starting location revealed. When a player moves into or interacts with a location that borders an unrevealed area, the corresponding new map section (tile or area) is revealed and added to the shared map. Revealed sections are tracked on the 'Map Revealed' portion of the tracking sheet or map board. Once revealed, a location remains revealed for the rest of the game.

Resource management

Players collect and hold items and cards, recorded per-player on the tracking sheet.

Items and cards acquired during the adventure are recorded in each player's 'Items and Cards' section of the tracking sheet. Items may provide passive benefits, be used as turn actions, or be required to resolve certain Points of Interest. Cards may grant special abilities, one-time effects, or narrative choices. There is no stated hand limit unless a specific card or rule imposes one.

Card play

Cards can be played for their stated effect; one-use cards are discarded after use.

When a player plays a card, they apply its stated effect immediately. Cards that are marked as single-use are removed from the player's possession after being played. Persistent cards remain with the player and continue to apply their effect or remain available for future use. Players may only play cards on their own turn unless the card explicitly states it can be played at another time (e.g., as a reaction).

Special

Points of Interest are unresolved story or exploration triggers at revealed locations.

Each revealed location may have one or more Points of Interest (PoI). PoIs are tracked as 'Unresolved' on the tracking sheet until a player resolves them by being at the location and spending a turn action to interact. Resolving a PoI may yield items, cards, narrative information, health changes, map reveals, or scoring points. Once resolved, the PoI is marked off the tracking sheet and does not trigger again.

Informe estratégico

Prioritise healing items before all players are incapacitated

Since all players reaching 0 Health simultaneously causes a chapter loss, always ensure at least one player retains enough Health to heal others. Keep at least one healing item in reserve rather than using all healing resources at once.

Coordinate location grouping for trading

Trading items is free and requires being at the same location. Plan movement so that players who need specific items for a Point of Interest are co-located with the player holding those items before the PoI interaction turn, avoiding wasted turns.

Resolve Points of Interest efficiently for maximum score

Points of Interest are a primary scoring source. Prioritise map exploration and PoI resolution, especially before chapter end conditions are met, since unresolved PoIs may not carry over or may become inaccessible.

Use single-use cards strategically — they are gone after use

Single-use cards are permanently discarded after play. Save powerful single-use cards for critical moments (e.g., dangerous encounters or key PoI resolutions) rather than using them early for minor benefit.

Maximise map reveal to uncover more Points of Interest

New PoIs and items only become accessible once map sections are revealed. Actively exploring the dungeon boundaries as early as possible opens more scoring opportunities across the chapter.

Preguntas frecuentes y casos límite

What happens if all players reach 0 Health at the same time?

If all players are simultaneously incapacitated (0 Health), the group loses the current chapter. They may retry the chapter or accept a score penalty per the game's narrative rules.

Can a player be healed beyond their Maximum Health?

No. A player's current Health can never exceed their Maximum Health. Any healing that would push Health above the maximum is simply lost.

Can a player resolve a Point of Interest without the required item?

No. If a Point of Interest requires a specific item or card to resolve, the player must possess that item/card and be at the location. Without the required item, the PoI remains unresolved.

Does trading items between players cost a turn action?

No. Trading items and cards between players at the same location is free and does not cost a turn action, unless a specific rule states otherwise.

Can a player move to a new location AND resolve a Point of Interest there in the same turn?

No. Moving to a location and resolving a Point of Interest are each separate turn actions. A player must move to a location on one turn and then interact/resolve the PoI on a subsequent turn, unless a card or special rule grants an additional action.

Can a player play a card on another player's turn?

Only if the card explicitly states it can be played as a reaction or outside of the player's own turn. By default, cards may only be played on the owning player's turn.

Can a revealed map section become hidden again?

No. Once a map section is revealed, it remains revealed for the rest of the game. Only unrevealed sections can be newly revealed.

Are scores from earlier chapters lost if the group fails a chapter?

No. Scores are recorded separately per chapter. A chapter failure results in a penalty to that chapter's score (or a retry), but previously recorded chapter scores remain. All chapter scores are summed for the final total.
