Battle Brothers - The Board Game is a card-based 1 vs 1 skirmish game based on the cult video game Battle Brothers. Players take control of a human band of mercenaries or an orc marauder warband in a battle; to defeat your opponent, you need to rout them and make them flee, or capture their banner. A game begins with the Economy Phase, essentially a deck-building mini game with two variants: one where players can develop their deck to a maximum value, with every card having a different cost; and a Quick Draft for a faster, simpler approach, with 3 rounds to buy the cards you want, but with a set amount of gold each round for it. Once each player has their deck, the Skirmish Phase begins. Both factions deploy their units onto a hex board and engage in turn-based combat, moving units and attacking with them, with the possibility of using skills, consumables, perks, and attack modifiers in their turns. The main phase of the battle has three steps: the Quick Step, the Alternating Step and the Slow Step. In the Quick Step, the player with the highest Initiative can perform actions with several units (precisely how many depends on the faction and current Initiative), which in turn can alter the turn order with immediate effect. Then comes the Alternating Step, where players take turns in performing Actions until one runs out of units (since a unit can only perform one action per round). And then in the Slow Step, the player who still has untapped units gets to act with all of them. Finally, when all these steps are done, the next round begins with a Preparation Phase that serves to refresh all units, get new cards and play out the Morale effects for each warband. —description from the publisher
