About

PodBound is a competitive ecological survival card game where players manage colonies of isopod species adapting to shifting environmental conditions. Each player controls a distinct species with unique traits and must navigate a shared ecosystem where food supply, environmental conditions, and biological stress constantly change. The game is grounded in real ecological principles, where survival depends on balancing growth, resource use, and adaptation rather than simply accumulating points or overpowering opponents. Gameplay unfolds over a series of rounds where a shared “condition track” determines environmental effects such as resource scarcity, temperature shifts, predation pressure, and habitat instability. Each round, players select actions like Forage, Expand, Adapt, or Prepare, which influence how their colony responds to the environment and competes for limited food. Food is revealed each round and divided between players based on conditions and choices, forcing constant strategic tradeoffs between short-term survival and long-term growth. As colonies evolve, they may gain population, suffer stress, or collapse under environmental pressure. Winning is determined by survival and ecological success across a full species run rather than single-round dominance. Players score based on their colony’s final population, stability, and ability to avoid collapse while maintaining growth under stress. The winner is the species that demonstrates the most successful long-term adaptation to the ecosystem, balancing expansion with resilience in a way that allows it to endure through the full sequence of environmental conditions. —description from the designer
